Annual yoga week comes to Rishikesh

Wednesday 6 December, 2006

One of the highlights of the yoga calendar, the annual yoga week in Rishikesh, India, is taking place from March 1 to 7, 2007. Organised by Uttaranchal Tourism, the event attracts yogis from around the world, lured by the promise of a week of yoga immersion by the Ganges.

All the major traditions - including hatha, raja, karma, bhakti, manstra, laya and jnana - will be represented, and the much-loved Parmath Niketan ashram will be the host.

Visitors to India's reputed yoga capital of the world are in danger of being overwhelmed by the sheer number of Rishikesh's ashrams, offering varying courses on meditation, yoga and Hindu philosophy.

They include: The Sivananda Ashram, Yoga Niketan Ashram and the Vanmali Gita Yogashram - but most should be booked far in advance.

Rishikesh is in the northern part of Uttar Pradesh, 238 km north of Delhi and 356 meters above sea level.
