Repetitive strain, overstretching the neck and injuries to the shoulder, spine, legs and knees were the most common yoga-related injuries in 2004, according to a report. A study by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission found there were more than 3,700 yoga-related injuries costing almost $11m (£5.7m) in medical care during that year.
A report in the Seattle Times on minimising the chances of injury urged students to make sure yoga teachers are experienced and well qualified before joining a class.
Other tips include ensuring cold muscles are well warmed up; making sure that clothing allows for proper movement, and asking the teacher's advice if students are unsure.
