The high-profile Incredible India campaign launched with much fanfare in Spring 2005 and has run across TV, radio and the internet as well as traditional print media.
For the year 2005-6, the India government set aside an impressive $48m (£32m) for the campaign.
This year has seen a falling away in tourist visits to the sub-continent, partly due to the Mumbai attacks in November 2008. Real GDP growth for the country's Travel & Tourism economy is expected to be only 0.2% this year.
However, predictions are that this is a temporary blip - according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, India expects a steady 7.7% growth rate in tourism over the coming decade.
It's interesting that a whole section of the Incredible India website is dedicated to yoga - there's even an explanation of Patanjali's eight limbs.
Ayurveda and 'wellness' also enjoy prominence on the site - shining evidence of India's irresistible lure as the world's foremost destination for spiritual seekers of all kinds.
